During 2022, Sehlare Sa Meetlwa (SSM) and VBKOM embarked on a concerted effort to enhance the well-being of the communities in which they operate. In pursuit of this objective, SSM proactively engaged with different project leaders within the community, a move that brought to light the pressing needs of Refentse Primary School in Groenwater, Postmasburg, and Maikaelelo Primary School in Olifantshoek. The initial outreach program, featuring a Christmas Gifts initiative in late 2022 and a subsequent Back-to-School event in early 2023, proved to be successful and laid the foundation for a more enduring commitment by the SSM team.
Motivated by the positive outcomes of their initial efforts, SSM made the strategic decision to establish a long-term association with the two primary schools, giving rise to the formation of Atlega Community Projects NPC 2023/940165/08. This entity operates as a Non-Profit Company (NPC) with a primary mission centered around uplifting and improving conditions at Refentse Primary School and Maikaelelo Primary School. The name “Atlega,” derived from the local Setswana language, carries profound significance, translating to notions of prospering, achieving, succeeding, and making progress.
Recognising the complexity of community development, SSM sought additional expertise and collaboration in the form of a partnership with Tloleho Environment and Social Consulting (Tloleho). This collaborative effort aims to leverage the skills and insights of Tloleho to identify, prioritise, and coordinate various social projects within the primary schools. The overarching goal is not only to address immediate needs but to contribute to the sustained development and progress of the communities involved. Through the establishment of Atlega Community Projects and the strategic collaboration with Tloleho Environment and Social Consulting, Sehlare Sa Meetlwa demonstrates a holistic and forward-thinking approach to community engagement and social responsibility.
